Work in progress of the rules for the Stargate RPG. This is an early beta version and will be changing. These rules should be used for playtest and treated as confidential. Please provide feedback via: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfdpUL8Ankv3ZHN-Fxxc6WdQNlBZhklMtvVjGJgc3nx79zt6Q/viewformFree8 points -
We have been very hard at work on the development of the Stargate RPG. The closed beta playtest has now been going on since October and the feedback has been phenomenal! There have been many iterations of the core rulebook put through its paces by hundreds of people. With that said, we have two very exciting announcements about the Stargate RPG! Public Beta Playtest is now available! We had an overwhelming response to our first round of private playtest, so much so we had to turn people away. Well in this round, no one is turned away. Ok so I am a gun guy in real life. Been shooting for 45 years, six in the Army as an Infantryman. Some thoughts on weapons ranges, versus what is currently in print, and what has been suggested. Sidearm - Qualification for the CCDW (concealed carry) permit in Kentucky is 20 rounds, within the designated space on a target that resembles the standard E-type silhouette used by the US military. Range to hit the target is 7m. I can hit a target, generally speaking, out to 25m, anything beyond that will be a waste of ammo, or just suppressive fire. Longarm - this will vary by specific weap3 points

Does the development team plan on having any miniatures made for this game? is it going to be something we could perhaps kickstart? I know I for one would kickstart the heck out of some miniatures! i mean think about it! an aspiring "mission commander" gathers their friends around the table to try out the new Stargate RPG not only do they whip out enough books for everyone at the table but they also have plenty of minuatrues and maybe even some paper maps to make this inaugural session an immersive and memorable experience! ive seen some miniatures by other developers but they3 points

It takes a special game for me to back it on a personal level. My wife and I own a game store and when we found out about the Stargate Roleplaying Game we had to jump on it as individuals. I can't wait to see what is in store for us.2 points

This is mainly directed at the Administrators. I was thinking to publish my online discord campaigns as a podcast so I can share my groups adventures with the community and give the devs something to analyze in real time instead of a feedback form. Is there any issues with doing that? Just wanted to ask here first before going ahead and doing anything.2 points

I suspect the answer is probably "both", but the DHD is kept powered down and locked away in the basement for emergency situations. As a corollary, Phoenix Base using a dialling computer means it's going to be unaffected by next year's Avenger 2.0 incident but any teams it has deployed are going to be just as badly affected as those of the SGC2 points

We’re doing the same thing ourselves we’ve already hired artists and a theme song composer. Anything to get eyes on this game should be good2 points

Whether required or not, D&D 5E is the largest selling RPG in the world. It accounts for literally millions of players. And about 75% of those won't even think about a different game engine, for a variety of reasons. For a small company, basing off anything else is going to merely cut the potential sales by more than half. Stargate, likewise, isn't the biggest IP around. FFG got away with Star Wars by several factors: FFG is a long standing powerhouse in the industry; Star Wars is one of the highest grossing IP's ever, and FFG went all out on the public beta. Also listing "bow" is strange, since that's wrapped up under common weapons currently. It seems insane that a modern military scout would not have the ability to use longarms, so second that.2 points

You ask, I deliver. I just asked a friend of mine who is currently in the Army. The following numbers should be read as a standard accuracy range, I would argue that the way we would apply them would be the combat distances would be a good first increment distance. Ideally with more like the 3.5 ish range increments than the 5e ones, but I can be only so picky. Target: (based on ratings for fire arms) Pistol: 50 yards SMG: 200 yards Rifle: 500 yards Sniper: 1800 yard Combat: of course fuzzy Pistol: 20 yards SMG: 100 yards Rifle: 200 yard Sniper: Undefined.2 points

I got sucked into the Discord main channel debate on this last night. (AKA Time in my life I won't get back) My only suggestion to the overall debate would be to make the max range the weapon system's max "effective range" which would put the P90 at 200m. Then take 25-50% of that range as the "close" range for the weapon. They also need to make different longarms because a P90, an M4, and an M16 all have very different stats and ranges. If they don't, however, that's their prerogative since the numbers they list are based on real world tested statistics. As for the argument a2 points

Our purpose wasn't to become a murderhobo party, but mostly to clarify the existing rules. If anything this restricts the players more. As it is, this actually binds the players more to what is available on base, and what they are actually able to requisition. Players are welcome to rearm themselves after the briefing, and this way I can be more free to have interesting restrictions or stories which force the players to think about their equipment.2 points

I've allowed every character to start with a feat in 5e for years, and it only adds to the fun. Sometimes it's racial feats only, other times it's open, but really - not only does it make the cookie-cutter characters a bit more unique, it also tends to increase the investment the players have in the characters.2 points

I played a Tok'ra, I enjoyed it. Made an Int/Wis character Int was the human part, wis the tokra. Rolled opposing ability checks at the start of the session to see who was in command at the start. Got to play two seperate character types. Had 2 defining factors, one for each persona, and when one of those was close, the corresponding persona would ask to be in command during that part.2 points

EDIT: Sorry! I realised I placed this in the wrong section. Should probably belong in General Discussion I'm currently "writing" a homebrew pilot session for my players and I'm wondering if the Phoenix Site uses a DHD or a dialling computer.1 point

I think this is developed enough now to share. My game doesn't use Roll20, as I personally am not a big fan of its interface (Bwhahahaha GM Mad with power!). So that I could still see their sheets, and help people create their character I made an automated sheet for them to use. It has been updated several times due to comments, and always happy to hear more comments of changes people would like to see. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RSV-HfChgr279paYvjdIgR2qD5Xmw4RSd5j5QEBM4TI/edit?usp=sharing1 point

Whether the magic item cycle is bad in D&D is a strawman, but it's clear from the feats that it's not intended as part of the rules, by feats making the attacks power up. It was a strawman I didn't care to address; since you bring it up, it's part of the mythic structure many D&D campaigns, wherein it feels if not good, at least reasonable. But in Stargate, the weapons as a whole tend to be fairly stable across the series for each series. SG1, there is the move from P90's to Zats; even then, many missions are P90's. Universe, they never have access to new weapons (excluding the ship'1 point

You make a lot of good points, and I think the crux of the issue is how all that translates to representation on the tabletop. I don’t think it’s necessary to get into the realism or granularity of real world firearms beyond some really basic points, because to do otherwise invites breaking the entire game framework D&D 5e is in many respects grounded in melee combat, and the ranges reflect that. Even most of the longest range spells and weapons top out at 120ft before you start rolling at disadvantage. If we take into consideration the constraints of tabletop play, the a1 point

I concur. This is a holdover from DnD 5e. With guns and other weapons requiring only a forward face, there should not be disadvantage to attacks.1 point

A refugee from Tollana, Bervell burns with a desire to punish the Goa’uld System Lords. Shortly after finishing his studies, the Goa’uld Anubis sent his emissary and Bervell watched as his people were forced to flee their home. One by one, the ships were shot down, killing everyone he’d known and loved. Bervell spent months in isolation, hiding in the ruins of his homeworld and attempting to call for help. Risking his life so that the universe would know his people’s fate, he managed to get an aging satellite online remotely. However, before he could complete his transmission, Goa’uFree1 point -
I'm playing episodes 1 and 3 but couldn't get into 2. Really looking forward to playing something new and meeting a bunch of new people I was curious about the character creation part too. I am not sure I'll have time to actually create a fully-fledged character before Thursday. I haven't played anything based on D&D 5th Ed (played a lot of Living Greyhawk back in the day, but nothing since 3.5) and a Pathfinder campaign. And since this seems to be based on 5th ed open license I feel like I'm missing the details. I'd like to play a scientist as the characters I'm planning1 point

I noticed the tau'ri firearms "department" is rather generic. I understand the basic premise about that, as we have a stunningly broad variety of weapons and trying to reflect that would require a whole suplement on its own. But there's the point about SGC, as a military organization, running a policy on standard issued weapons, which would limit the actual range of a potential weapon table to a selected few. So, I suggest some ideas to look into and debate: Handguns Weapon TechLevel Damage Type Range Capacity Reload Bulk Special Beretta M91 point

You are mistaking an animal friend with a trained animal. You don't need to be a scout or a specific race to order a trained animal to perform its routines; that's something almost anyone could do. So, there's no need for a background, just a skill in the line of Handle Animal and rules for teaching tricks to animals. Also, note an animal companion is not the same as a trained animal. The first is a friend, the second is a tool. That's a subtle difference most D&D players completely miss: you don't put a friend willingly into danger but most people won't hesitate throwing their animal comp1 point

ENGINEER (Last edited 2020.05.13) This is a version of the engineer that excites me, hooking into a couple of other subsystems while remaining part of one I can only make suppositions about. The class features are based on the more aggressive balancing in the top post. First Principles is stolen from the Wright origin as part of getting rid of the monofocusing I decry above. It's so damn good, and gets the class involved narratively and mechanically with the whole getting to grips with alien tech idea right out of the, ahem, gate. Also, the name that it had originally been given1 point

I thought I saw something that covered this but can't find it. What happens when you're given the same proficiency from multiple sources, such as the Healer origin and the Medic class. In base5e they allow you to pick another tool proficiency when given 2 identical tool options but say nothing about any other type, and the only other thing that sort of mentions this is the usual "only 1 source of 'vantage counts" when subject to multiple instances of the same type. Given every class in this game has at least 1 ideal background origin, it's seems counter-intuitive t1 point

A person needs to be cautious with some of the rules still too. There are inconsistencies in the skills and some carry over language from 5e SRD. Everything's in meters so meters is the scale.1 point

Hi all! I'm from Barcelona (Catalonia) and I just discovered this project. It expect it will release some interesting material. In our club we are running our 2nd campaign on Stargate setting. In fact we are finishing it as I'm the DM and the writer and I see how theay are reaching the ending of the story. In first campaing we played 22 game sessions during 2016 and 2017 and in this 2nd campaign we have already played 15 sessions. So more or less it will be the same. We use Pathfinder+little house rules and it fits good. Just erased all magic and spells that cannot be "explained1 point

Hi all! My name is Brad and I'm the CEO of Wyvern Gaming. I wanted to first thank you for joining us on this mission of creating a new roleplaying game for Stargate. We love the franchise and want to make sure our game puts you in it. This adventure was the brainchild of our friend & partner Philip Loyer, who unfortunately is no longer with us. He would have been thrilled with the progress we have made, but incredibly nervous about the days to come. If he were still here we would joke about it and he would stress over it anyway. I miss my friend. This is for him.1 point
