Son to a retired general of the navy, they have high hopes for their childer to succeed.  Other cultures fascinate Eddie in a way that pushes them to understand the human condition, which includes themselves.  This drive pushes them to chase physical as well as mental limits.  Maybe his mother will look upon him from beyond and be proud, in a way his father never could.
