Born in Leiden, South Holland, moved to the U.S. with his family when he was 15. 

Graduated UC Berkeley, CA. Ph.D. in astronomy and physics

Worked at UCLA postdoctoral using the Lick  Griffith Observatory.

Later was a professor at UC Santa Cruz and often visited the Lick Observatory
