Engineers and R&D encounters

I'm looking for some ideas about what engineer players could create or modify with downtime R&D encounters.  Obviously other classes can do this too, but I feel like most people who would want to use R&D would play engineer.

So far, the simplest ideas I had were to add or change weapon attachments and mods, such as adding a laser sight to a shotgun, or an attached flashlight to a P90.

The only more complicated idea I have had so far is to tailor a P90 to a particular character, allowing them to use the benefit of the reflex sight if they move less than 3m (as opposed to only being stationary)
